State and Local Laws and Policy

It is important to familiarize yourself with the state laws, and your local district’s homeschooling policies.

Being a member of RIGHT, HSLDA or other organization can also give you community and a place to voice questions or concerns.

If you have any difficulty gaining approval from your district or have questions about the process, contact us for help.

Rhode Island Home Education Laws:

16-19-1  Attendance required –  covers the ages of compulsory attendance

16-19-2  Approval of private schools – covers the subjects required by law, the submission of attendance registers, and other instructions.

16-22-2  Civics – as a required subject encompasses previously required subjects in 16-19-2, (for an explanation see HSLDA’s ‘Civics’ in, Government and History out’)

16-22-4  Instruction in health and physical education.

16-23-2  Loan of Textbooks – Should you wish to borrow texts from the school.
