Getting Started

Steps to Homeschooling in Rhode Island

Homeschooling is not just an educational choice, but a lifestyle commitment. Research, study, pray. Consider this decision with care.

We hope that our site will help you formulate your own philosophy, methods and goals.

Begin your Research

First, familiarize yourself with the RI laws.  Know your rights and responsibilities.

Next, read, read and read. There are many books, websites, blogs and magazines that will help you develop your own philosophy of education and set goals for your homeschool.

See Reading List.

Communication with your School District

A letter of intent must be submitted to your local district. The letter can be sent to the superintendent’s office or school committee. Most districts require a letter each year.

Once the district receives your letter, it will be passed to the school committee, and they will vote on it. You do not need to wait for the approval of the committee to begin your schooling.

The district will send a letter letting you know of your approval. Keep this letter for your records.

An end of year letter must be submitted to your district at the conclusion of your school year.

Choosing Resources and Curriculum

You can purchase curriculum from a supplier, or you can piece together and create your own for free.  Just as no family is identical, no education plan will look the same.  With homeschooling, you have the ability to tailor your teaching to fit the needs of your children.

Please see Choosing Curriculum for more information.
